Updates to USHPA SOPs
Updates for Pilots, Instructors, Observers, Examiners, and Mentors

Colorado Springs - USHPA occasionally makes important changes to the Association�s standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other documents, especially documents used in the rating system. Please review the latest documents in the Members Only section of the USHPA web site. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact your Regional Director. And as an effort to keep everyone updated, please be sure to keep your e-mail address up-to-date, as these notices go out by e-mail as they are released.

Members, don't forget you can get copies of the SOPs right out of Members Only.

SOP 12-02: Pilot Proficiency Program

Beginner Hang Gliding (H-1)

� Modified Task: Two flights, predetermined to show smooth straight flight towards a pre-selected target.

Novice Hang Gliding (H-2)

� Added Task: Demonstrates 180� turns in both directions, and at various speeds and bank angles.
� Added Special Skill: 360 - Demonstrates ability to do 360� turns in both directions with constant airspeed and bank angle.
� The written exam has been updated. Please obtain a new version of the exam from the USHPA web site (by downloading a new packet) or call the USHPA office.

Beginner Paragliding (P-1)

� Modified Task: Two flights, predetermined to show smooth straight flight towards a pre-selected target.

Novice Paragliding (P-2)

� Added Task: Demonstrates 180� turns in both directions, and at various speeds and bank angles.
� Deleted Task: Novice 360�
� Added Special Skill: 360 - Demonstrates ability to do 360� turns in both directions with constant airspeed and bank angle.
� Modified Task: Demonstrates the proper use of a speedbar/accelerating system.
� Modified Task: Gives a thorough verbal demonstration of knowledge of how to fly at minimum sink while precluding any chance of inadvertent stall or spin, particularly when flying through lift, sink or in conjunction with making turns.

Intermediate Paragliding (P-3)

� Deleted Intermediate Task: Explains characteristics of impending stall and impending spin.
� Added Intermediate Task: Gives a thorough explanation of:

i. why flying a paraglider with one or both control toggles significantly extended should be avoided unless flaring for a landing.
ii. the signs that the paraglider has entered a stalled configuration (one or both sides).

Tandem Program

� The tandem appointment and renewal process has been streamlined. A Regional Director's signature is no longer required for appointment.

SOP 12-07: Revocation/Reduction/Reinstatement

� Appointments (such as Examiner, Observer and Mentor) can now be revoked without cause.
� A new temporary (30 day) rating revocation can now be made by Regional Directors for actions which pose an immediate and imminent threat to safety or site access.

SOP 12-05: Directors, Observers, Examiners, and Instructors

� SOP 12-05 has been overhauled. Please get a new copy and review. Members can get new SOP's from Members Only.
� Mentor Program: Directors and Examiners have new responsibilities with respect to the Mentor Program.
